During my time in Birmingham, I listened to the Blues Power show every chance I got. Not just because he played great records (sometimes the same one two or three times in a row), but because his antics and gags were so entertaining. Al’s show was the last of its kind, at least as far as I’d ever heard - a throwback to the era of personality disc jockeys of the 50’s and 60’s like Memphis’ Dewey Phillips. They just don’t make radio shows like this anymore, and they haven’t in a long, long time.

There doesn’t appear to be any clips of Al online anywhere, so this may be the only one. I recorded this at the time because I felt someone should document at least a little bit of it. If he’s still on the air somewhere, I don’t know about it. The Birmingham Black & White paper did an excellent profile and interview with Mr. Isaac at the time, and you can read it here.

Incidentally, WATV was founded by Shelley “The Playboy” Stewart, whose radio show was instrumental in the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham in the 1960’s (Stewart was once given electroshock treatment for trying to integrate a whites-only dance). He published The Road South: A Memoir in 2002.

Wow, thanks for letting me know this exists, Spotify.

Wow, thanks for letting me know this exists, Spotify.

45andsingle:

The higher we get, the more informal we are.” Roger Miller on Ralph Emery’s local Nashville morning show, the Opry Almanac, in 1966. He was born on this day in 1936.

Roger was at his artistic and commercial peak at this point, and had apparently been up all night before this appearance. He didn’t bring a guitar, and the bass player shows up late and walks right in front of the camera.

That’s Thumbs Carllile on the guitar with the Batman shirt, and Buddy Holly drummer Jerry Allison sits in and does a short interview. Last but not least, the great Charlie Louvin appears as well.

The Rambler commercials, Soviets in the news, the weather report written on a sketch pad…I also hear a couple of regional Southern accents that you pretty much never hear from anyone under 60. This might be my favorite thing I’ve ever found on YouTube.

Read this wonderful 1980 fanzine interview with Chuck, wherein he reviews a few punk singles:

http://musicruinedmylife.blogspot.com/2012/10/chuck-berry-reviews-punk-singles-1980.html?m=1

On the Sex Pistols: “What’s this guy so angry about anyway?”

On the Clash: “Did the guy have a sore throat when he sang the vocals?”

He liked the Romantics, Dave Edmunds, & Paul Collins though!
